This almost certainly points to the alternator being the cause. The H6 alternator output voltage is controlled by the vehicle ECU snd the cheaper aftermarket alternators are known to not be able to properly communicate with the ECU. LarsBang Discussion starter · Jul 5, 2020. I have a 2002 H6 3.0 and I was getting codes P0420 and P0171, so I started by replacing the passenger side O2 sensor. This cleared those two codes nicely, but then within 10 seconds the CEL came on again and I got the P0031 code. I've tried clearing it a couple of times, but it still comes back on.
